|Getting to San Miguel |
San Miguel is a very remote community which can only be reached by traveling up the Cayapas River in a motor canoe from Borbon (a small river port) There is a daily service to and from San Miguel in a motor canoe called the 'San Miguel Eco Tourismus', it departs Borbon between 10 and 11AM each day and can easily be found by looking at the dock or asking for Hellario the boatman. The best way to travel to Borbon is by bus or private car. Depending on the starting point there are many different routes; from Quito there are 2 main routes which you can take, in both cases buses depart from the main terminal in the old town
1. Quito - San Lorenzo - Borbon
This journey takes you through dry Sierra to the North of Quito and then down into the lush green forests of Esmeraldas
2. Quito - San Mateo - Borbon
This journey takes you through the beautiful cloud forests to the Northwest of Quito and then through small fishing villages on the coast. NB. San Mateo is a small town with a checkpoint and is a hub for local transport. Buses stop there en route to Esmaraldas.
